He was Nathaniel Ropes Professor of Political Economy at Harvard University until his premature death in 2020. He served as Chairman of the Department of Economics from 2003 to 2006. He was a member of NBER and CEPR, the Econometric Society and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and he was Director of the political economy programme of NBER from 2006. He was co-editor of the “Quarterly Journal of Economics” for six years and associate editor of many academic journals. He published numerous articles in all the main academic journals on economics, many editorials in the most important newspapers around the world, and several books, including: Un mondo di differenze.
